Trailblazing Women in the Hair Industry

Celebrating Diversity & Innovation

March is Women’s History Month, a time to honor the groundbreaking contributions of women across all industries—including the world of hair. At Modify the Hair Art Studio, we believe in celebrating the rich and diverse history of women who have shaped the hair industry through their artistry, innovation, and cultural influence.

From pioneering product lines to redefining hair care and styling, these incredible women have left a lasting impact:

Madam C.J. Walker (1867–1919) – Entrepreneur & Haircare Pioneer

As the first self-made female millionaire in the U.S., Madam C.J. Walker revolutionized Black hair care with her specialized hair products and hot comb techniques. She also championed economic empowerment, creating jobs for thousands of Black women in the beauty industry.

Marjorie Joyner (1896–1994) – The Woman Behind the Modern Hair Wave

A protégé of Madam C.J. Walker, Marjorie Joyner invented the permanent wave machine, allowing women of all hair types to achieve long-lasting curls. She also helped shape the beauty school industry and advocated for women’s rights.

Martha Matilda Harper (1857–1950) – Inventor of the Modern Salon Model

A Canadian-born entrepreneur, Martha Matilda Harper created the first chain of hair salons, known as the Harper Method, which introduced the idea of salon franchising. She also developed reclining shampoo chairs, a staple in salons today!

Christina M. Jenkins (1888–1985) – Inventor of the Sew-In Weave

An African American innovator from the mid-20th century, Christina M. Jenkins patented the “hair weeve” technique in 1951, revolutionizing hair extensions by sewing commercial hair onto a client’s scalp. Her invention laid the groundwork for modern weave styles, offering versatility and longevity to hair design, particularly within Black communities.

Rocio Mora (Latina Influencer Curl Specialist)

Known for her work in natural curls and textured hair, Rocio Mora is a Dominican-American hairstylist and educator who embraces the beauty of natural hair. Her influence has helped reshape the conversation around curly hair representation in the beauty world.

Vidal Sassoon & His Legacy with Annie Humphreys (UK Stylist & Colorist)

While Vidal Sassoon is a household name, many don’t know about Annie Humphreys, a British colorist who transformed modern hair coloring techniques and worked alongside Sassoon to redefine hair trends. Her work influenced generations of colorists worldwide.

These women—and countless others—have shaped the way we care for, style, and celebrate hair across cultures. This Women’s History Month, we honor their legacy and the talented hairstylists who continue to push boundaries today.

At Modify the Hair Art Studio, we celebrate diversity in hair artistry every day. Whether you’re looking for a fresh color, a bold new style, or just the confidence that comes with great hair, we’re here to help you express yourself!
